The Grenadier Company of the 2nd Battalion 89th Regiment of Foot.
Formed in 1803, the 2nd Battalion was employed largely on home service
until 1810. On October 13th of 1810 the Regiment, under the command of
Lieutenant General Andrew, Lord Blayney, took part in the siege of
Fuengirola. In this siege the 89th suffered badly and were then under
strength when the Regiment arrived in Canada on October 13, 1812. The
Regiment was stationed at Halifax until June 5th 1813 when it was
transferred to Quebec, and upon arrival was immediately transferred to Upper
Canada. The Regiment left two days later and marched 400 miles in
nineteen days. The light company was transferred to the Light Brigade and was
in action by the 24th of August, 1813. The remainder of the Regiment
garrisoned at the Fort in Kingston. Here the Regiment took part in the
famous Battle of Crysler's Farm on November 11, 1813. By June of 1814
the Light Company was back with the Regiment and fought fiercely at the
Battle of Lundy's Lane, suffering the highest casualties of any British
Regiment there. After Lundy's Lane the 2nd Battalion was too weak to
take part in the siege of Fort Erie, but the Light Company was again
detached for that operation. In December of 1814 the War was concluded
and the 89th Regiment was stationed in York, the capitol of Upper Canada,
and six months later set sail for England and arrived in August of
1815.
The 2nd Battalion 89th Regiment (recreated) was formed in the fall of
1999 and has been continually active in recreating the battles of the War of 1812 ever since that time. The group currently has 25 members from Southern Ontario who seek to accurately portray the military and civilian life of
the 19th century.
